Editorial Degrees of Intervention. Fourteenth annual conference of the European Society for Textual Scholarship (ESTS). University of Alcalá, 23rd-24th November 2017

Venue: Alcalá de Henares

Dates: 23-24 November 2017

Programme https://textualscholarship.eu/ests-2017/

The conference theme is “Editorial degrees of intervention”. Editing a text is a way of making it our own, of bringing it to our time and our cultural context regardless of the language and the time of production. This explains why each period needs their own editions. Probably, editors will not be neutral when facing the texts they are working on. Following the tradition of the ESTS, the conference welcomes a wide range of topics. Papers can be on any language and on any period. Participants are invited to submit proposals for 20-minute presentations (followed by 10-minute discussion). The language of the conference is English. A suggested – though not prescriptive – list of topics includes:

  • Modernisation of texts
  • Editor´s attitude towards the authorial text
  • The notion of “bad” manuscripts
  • Palaeographic editions
  • Critical editions
  • Paratexts and marginalia
  • The author´s voice and the editor´s voice

As well as other more general topics that have always been fostered by the Society:

  • Digital versus printed editions
  • The target audience
  • Selection of texts worth editing
  • Scholarly editions

Proposals of participation, paper title and abstract (250-300 words, excluding references) should be submitted as an email attachment (preferably .doc or docx) before 30th April 2017 to the following address: ests2017@uah.es

Details about the payment (100€, which covers conference fee and ESTS membership) will be provided by the time registration begins.
